Delhi Trams May Run Again In Old Delhi: After 63 years, trams may once again run in Old Delhi. Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government, is considering a plan to introduce trackless tram service in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, after 63 years. This time, instead of laying separate tracks for trams on the road, the proposal is to run trackless trams. This will boost tourism in historical areas and improve transportation on narrow roads.
The government believes that such trams can operate more easily on the narrow and winding roads of Old Delhi. The government has ordered a study of various aspects of the plan. Following this, a draft of the route, size, capacity, and other technical aspects will be prepared.
In the initial phase, the option of running two trams in opposite directions is also being explored. Their speed is likely to be kept lower than other road vehicles to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians in the crowded area. According to the government’s plan, tram operations will be limited to Old Delhi for the time being. The final route has not yet been decided. The number of seats the tram will have, its size, and the roads it will run on will all be decided after careful study.

Attempted Restart in 2014

Technical difficulties in creating a dedicated track for trams proved to be the biggest obstacle. There were practical challenges in laying and operating tracks in the busy and limited road space of Old Delhi. This is why the plan to restart trams failed to materialize. Now, once again, Delhi’s new BJP government has taken the historic initiative to reinstate trams.
