Union Cabinet approves continuation of PM-KISAN scheme from FY 2027 to 2031

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi , on Friday approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme from fiscal year 2026-27 to 2030-31. The government has approved a financial provision of ₹3.15 lakh crore for this period. This decision is an important step towards increasing farmers’ income, strengthening agricultural investment, and boosting the rural economy.

Financial provision of Rs 3.15 lakh crore for this period

In an official statement, the government said that the scheme has established a successful model of technology-based farmer welfare, eliminating the role of middlemen and ensuring that the assistance amount reaches the beneficiaries directly.

Launched in February 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme provides financial assistance of ₹6,000 per year to eligible farmer families in three equal installments directly into their bank accounts. The entire process is conducted transparently through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Aadhaar authentication, and digital verification.

So far, an amount of more than Rs 4.47 lakh crore has been disbursed in 23 installments.

According to government data, more than ₹4.47 lakh crore has been transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts through 23 installments under the PM-KISAN scheme so far. Under the 23rd installment of the scheme, ₹18,984 crore was released to more than 9.49 crore farmers. Furthermore, more than ₹1.71 lakh crore was provided to provide relief to farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Women farmers also benefited on a large scale

The PM-KISAN scheme has also benefited women farmers on a large scale. More than ₹1.06 lakh crore has been disbursed to women farmers so far. According to the government, nearly one in four beneficiaries of the scheme is a woman farmer.

The government says that the financial assistance provided under PM-KISAN has helped farmers invest in seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, farm machinery, and other agricultural needs in a timely manner. This has increased farmers’ productivity, reduced their dependence on informal credit, and strengthened the economic well-being of rural families.

Independent evaluation shows positive results of the scheme

An independent evaluation conducted by NITI Aayog’s Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) also revealed positive results from the scheme. According to the study, over 92 percent of farmers reported using the assistance funds for agricultural purposes and agricultural investments. Nearly 85 percent of beneficiaries reported improved agricultural income and reduced the need for borrowing from informal sources.

According to the government, significant progress was recorded in the agriculture sector between 2020-21 and 2025-26. During this period, cultivated area increased by approximately 9.65 percent, productivity by 10.53 percent, and total food grain production by 21.18 percent. The government believes that schemes like PM-KISAN have played a significant role in strengthening the agricultural sector.

PM-KISAN scheme is a successful initiative of Digital India

The government has described the PM-KISAN scheme as a successful Digital India initiative. Through Aadhaar-based authentication, digital beneficiary verification, and the DBT system, assistance funds are being directly transferred to farmers’ accounts. According to the government, this scheme is not limited to financial assistance, but also enhances farmers’ self-reliance, self-confidence, and agricultural investment capacity.

The government says that continuing the scheme for the next five years will increase farmers’ investment capacity and productivity, reduce agricultural risks, and strengthen the rural economy. The PM-KISAN scheme is a key pillar of the government’s farmer-centric policies, which aim to accelerate the goal of a ‘developed India’ by economically empowering millions of farmers.
