 To commemorate 79 years of India’s independence, a grand flag-off ceremony for the NCC Cyclothon Expedition 2026 was held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Saturday. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, and boxer and Olympic medalist Mary Kom were among the special guests present on the occasion.

Flagging off the cyclothon, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya said, “79 NCC cadets are participating in this cyclothon to celebrate 79 years of India’s independence. NCC is a symbol of fitness, discipline and social service. These cadets are the future of the country and our hope for tomorrow. Through this cyclothon, you are giving the message that the youth will play their role in building a developed India.”

He said, “That is why today PM Modi is making more than 1 crore youth take the oath of drug de-addiction. Youth from all over the country are coming forward and starting the drug de-addiction campaign through ‘My Bharat’. Cycling is not just fitness. Cycling is a solution to pollution. Cycling saves fuel. This campaign is being conducted at more than 18 thousand places in the country. It is going on like a movement. This movement going on in India is being appreciated on the international platform today. Today you have joined this cycling movement and taking the 79th Independence Day of the country along with you, you will cycle today as a message. My heartfelt wishes to all the youth.”

Olympic medalist Mary Kom, who was present on the occasion, inspired the youth. She said, “The NCC Cyclothon 2026 is taking place here in Delhi. I want to tell the youth that it is important to achieve a lot in life. Discipline is essential in any field. The youth should keep in mind the principle of ‘Never Give Up.'”

On the same day, the 84th edition of the Fit India Sunday on Cycle also began at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This year, the theme was “Drug-Free India.” Both the NCC Cyclothon and Fit India programs aim to connect youth with fitness, discipline, and a healthy lifestyle. They also aim to build a healthy and developed India by spreading awareness against drug abuse.
