Conservation and restoration work is going on in some parts of these monuments., Due to which the movement of tourists has been limited. Repair work in Hauz Khas and Kotla Firoz Shah
According to the RTI response, the work of repairing the structures of the monuments present in Hauz Khas and Kotla Feroze Shah Complex is going on. At the same time, work is being done to improve the facilities for tourists in Tughlakabad Fort and the tomb of Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq. An RTI reply has revealed that entry of tourists has been banned in a part of the buildings in the Hauz Khas complex. The complex developed around a large medieval reservoir. Later, madrasa, mausoleum and other buildings associated with the Delhi Sultanate were built here. The reservoir was constructed during the reign of Alauddin Khilji, while the later major buildings are associated with Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq. These also include madrasa and mausoleum.
Improvements in Qutub Minar and Salimgarh Fort also
The information received from RTI also mentions the improvement works being done to make the Qutub Minar Complex easier for people to access. Apart from this, repair and renovation work of Signal Regiment Building and Toilet Block is going on in Salimgarh Fort. At the same time, work of conservation of the well area including the parapet (wall) at the Lahore Gate of the Red Fort is also being done.
Restrictions in Jantar Mantar and Agrasen Baoli also
Movement of tourists has also been banned in the buildings of Jantar Mantar and Agrasen Ki Baoli in Central Delhi. However, it has not been made clear in the RTI response as to when these restrictions have been implemented. Jantar Mantar was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur in 1724. It is famous for its huge stone astronomical instruments, which were used for astronomical observations and calculations.
Ban on entry into 6 historical buildings of Red Fort
ASI's Delhi circle has banned the entry of tourists into six major buildings inside the Red Fort, Hamam, Moti Masjid, Diwan-e-Khas, Khas Mahal, Rang Mahal and Sheesh Mahal. The Hamam was the royal bathhouse of the Mughal rulers, while the Moti Masjid was built by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb for his personal use. Diwan-e-Khas, built during the reign of Shahjahan, was a major venue for private meetings, where the emperor met nobles and special guests. The Khas Mahal was part of Shahjahan's private residential area. Rang Mahal was associated with the life of the royal family, while Sheesh Mahal is considered a magnificent example of the architecture of the Mughal court. The restrictions imposed on some buildings in the Red Fort are quite old. Hammam and Moti Masjid have been closed to tourists for a long time. The main reason for this is said to be the danger of possible damage to the delicate marble and fine carvings present there due to the heavy tourist crowd.
Entry closed in some parts of Qutub Minar complex
According to ASI, some parts of the Qutub Minar complex have also been closed for tourists. These include the first floor of the Hindu Relic Corridor, the tomb of Jamali Kamali and the interior of the Qutub Minar. There has been a ban on entry of tourists inside Qutub Minar for a long time. After the stampede in 1981, the facility to go inside the minaret was closed.
Work in Safdarjung and Humayun's tomb also
At the same time, repair work of the mosque and its attached chambers is going on in the tomb of Safdarjung. On the other hand, work is being done to improve the facilities for tourists in Humayun's Tomb. Due to these conservation and improvement works, the movement of people in some parts of the historical sites was limited
Budget of crores every year for conservation works
Details of budget allocation and expenditure made for Delhi circle in the last five years have also been revealed in the RTI response. According to the data, Rs 19.10 crore was allocated in 2021-22, of which almost the entire amount was spent. According to the data, the budget increased to Rs 30.50 crore in 2022-23 and almost the entire amount was spent. After this, the highest amount of Rs 36.61 crore was allocated in 2023-24, out of which about Rs 36.57 crore was spent on conservation and related works. Whereas in 2024-25, the allocation came down to Rs 17.85 crore and almost the entire amount was spent. Rs 28.70 crore were allocated in 2025-26, out of which about Rs 28.67 crore was spent.
