New Delhi : Indian Railways is considering changes in ticket rates and system. India's railway system is all set for a major restructuring. Indian Railways is reportedly ready to change the traditional ticketing structure and flexi-fare system that has been in place for decades.
A new proposal of dynamic surge cap and flexible fare policy is under consideration. Under this, the fares of railway tickets will be determined automatically based on demand and supply. However, it is not yet clear when the final decision will be taken, what will be its provisions? There will be a limit of 25% increase on the basic ticket price during peak season, festival season. At the same time, provision will be made to provide direct discounts of 10 to 25 percent to passengers on low-demand routes. It is claimed that this dual ticketing system will provide affordable tickets to travelers on a tight budget.
It is also said that increased demand for seats in trains with fewer passengers could be helpful for railway revenue. According to this new policy, a maximum limit (surge cap) of up to 25 percent on the basic ticket price will be applied during festivals or off season. Due to this, passengers will not be charged excessive fares.
Discounts can also be availed at any time
If more than 30 percent of the train seats remain vacant 24 to 48 hours before the train chart is prepared, the system can automatically give a discount of 10 to 15 percent on the original ticket price. Apart from this, it is also proposed to offer a discount of up to 25 per cent on ticket prices to fill last-minute vacancies during off-season or on routes with consistently low passenger numbers. Passenger traffic information and revenue patterns in various railway sections are being studied. The railways claims that discounts of up to 25 per cent in the off-season will attract the middle class, students and budget travellers.
