Foreign students studying in US have got a big relief. A US court has put a stay on the Donald Trump Administration's proposal to limit the stay in the US for international students and exchange visitors to four years. Indian students have also got a big relief from this decision of a federal judge.
US District Court Judge F. Dennis Seller has blocked the Department of Homeland Security from enforcing this rule. The court has issued this stay order a day before the implementation of the rule. According to the proposed rule, the general limit for F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors was to be four years. Whereas in the proposal, in most of the cases, the limit of stay of foreign journalists was to be fixed at 240 days.

Why did the judge put a stay on the rule?
American judge F. Dennis Seller made a very strong comment on DHS's arguments. DHS said that eliminating the old D/S system would help prevent fraud in the student visa system and strengthen national security. But the judge called these arguments weak. According to him, the government did not provide a sufficient and strong foundation to change the system that had been in place for decades. The court did not just look at the impact of the students. He also considered the impact on American universities to be serious. About 16 lakh people in America are on F-1 visa, while about 5 lakh people have J-1 visa. Foreign students play a big role in American universities, especially in research and graduate programs. The judge warned that if this system was changed suddenly, enrollment of foreign students could decline and universities could suffer losses of hundreds of millions of dollars.
