Weather Warning: People across the country are reeling under the impact of severe heat; Amidst this, the “Monsoon Countdown” has officially begun! The IMD has issued an alert for tomorrow, May 23, warning of stormy rains and winds gusting up to 65 km/h across 13 states. Warnings regarding thunder, lightning, and heavy rainfall have also been issued. Find out when the monsoon is expected to arrive in your state.
Weather Warning: States across North India—including Delhi, UP, and Bihar—are currently experiencing intense heat. In view of this severe heat, the Meteorological Department has issued an alert. The department has advised residents in several areas to avoid venturing outdoors during the afternoon hours. According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is likely in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka due to the monsoon.
In its latest bulletin, the Meteorological Department stated that severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the plains of Northwest India, as well as in Central and East India, for the next 6–7 days. Consequently, people have been advised to “Stay Alert, Stay Protected.” The department has also issued an alert regarding heavy rainfall expected over the next few days in Kerala & Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim.
Over the past few days, maximum temperatures ranging between 40°C and 47°C have been recorded across Northwest, West, and Central India, as well as in adjoining parts of East and North Peninsular India. Notably, on May 21, the highest maximum temperature—47.6°C—was recorded in Banda (Uttar Pradesh).
When is the Monsoon Expected to Arrive?
The monsoon is expected to arrive in Uttar Pradesh by June 20, though in some areas it may begin by June 25. In Bihar, the monsoon is expected to arrive by June 10. In Delhi, the monsoon is likely to make its entry around June 25. Since the monsoon is arriving earlier than usual in Kerala this year, it may also arrive earlier than usual in several other states.
Weather in Delhi-NCR
An “Orange Alert” for a heatwave remains in effect for the Delhi-NCR region from May 23 to May 27. In addition to Delhi, severe heat conditions are expected to prevail across the entire NCR region, including Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram. Between May 23 and May 27, the daytime maximum temperature could reach up to 45°C.
Weather in Uttar Pradesh
In Uttar Pradesh, a severe heat alert has been issued for most districts for May 23. A ‘Yellow Alert’ regarding heat has been issued for 17 districts, including Deoria, Lakhimpur, Sitapur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Shahjahanpur. A ‘Red Alert’ for heat has been issued for 10 districts of UP. In Banda, the maximum temperature has reached 47.6 degrees Celsius.

Weather in Northeast India
– According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh between May 23 and 27, and in Assam and Meghalaya between May 23 and 28.
– Intense rainfall may be witnessed at isolated places in Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura between May 22 and 24.
– Heavy showers may occur at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh on May 23 and 24, and in Assam and Meghalaya between May 23 and 25.
Weather in East India
– The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for light to moderate rainfall in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 22 and 28.
– In Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds is likely between May 22 and 24.
– In Bihar and Jharkhand (May 22 to 28), and in Odisha (May 22 to 26), scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds is anticipated.
– Scattered hailstorms are possible in Odisha today, i.e., May 22.
Weather in Rajasthan
In Rajasthan, dusty storms and strong winds are forecast for several areas tomorrow, ie, May 23. A drop in temperature of up to 2 degrees Celsius may be observed.
Weather in Uttarakhand
An alert for rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning has been issued for Uttarakhand for tomorrow, ie, May 23. Hailstorms may also be witnessed in some hilly regions. Light rain accompanied by strong winds is possible in Dehradun, Nainital, and Uttarkashi.
Himachal Pradesh Weather
In Himachal Pradesh, a warning for rain accompanied by thunderstorms has been issued for the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla for tomorrow, May 23. According to the IMD, light rain is expected in Shimla, while Manali may experience squalls and lightning.
