Dvorkovich steps down as FIDE chief due to EU sanctions
In fact, FIDE chief Arkady Dvorkovich was included in the list of banned persons by the European Union, after which he has left his post until the ban is lifted. The European Union has imposed this ban in the context of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Russian Dvorkovich will challenge the decision of the European Union
However, Dvorkovich, a native of Russia, has decided to challenge the EU’s decision. Due to this action of the European Union, their accounts may be frozen and travel ban may be imposed on them.
“The FIDE Council accepts the decision of Arkady Dvorkovich to step down from his rights, duties and privileges as FIDE President,” FIDE said in a statement. In accordance with Article 19.2 of the FIDE Charter, FIDE Vice President Vishwanathan Anand will act as interim President while Dvorkovich remains banned.
Meanwhile, Dvorkovich said that the EU’s decision is unfair. He said, ‘The European Union has put my name in the list of banned persons. I clearly say that this decision is illegal and unjust and it will be challenged. I am confident that justice will prevail.
Dvorkovich said, ‘This ban could hamper the functioning of FIDE, so I have decided to step down from the duties of president. According to the charter of FIDE, Vice President Vishwanathan Anand will look after the work of the President.
