Trump Tariff War 17 Countries: Giving a big blow to 17 major economies of the world including India, the US administration has announced to impose an additional tariff of 10 percent on their goods. This strict step has been taken following the instructions of US President Donald Trump. US Trade Representative (USTR) Jameson Greer said that this action has been taken on those countries whose products are manufactured using ‘forced labour’. Complaints were received about its use.

Action taken under section 301

The US Trade Representative has announced new tariffs against a total of 60 countries using Section 301 of the Trade Act 1974. Of these, 17 countries like India, Canada, Britain, Bangladesh and Pakistan have been kept in the category of 10% additional tariff. According to USTR, these countries have failed to effectively prevent the importation of products made from forced labor, thereby imposing this economic burden on them.

What changed for India?

It is a matter of relief that earlier India was included in the list of countries on which it was proposed to impose 12.5% ​​tariff. However, now it has been reduced to 10%. According to the report, the Government of India, taking steps in this direction, had amended its foreign trade policy on June 14 and banned the import of goods made with forced labour, the effect of which is seen in this slight reduction in the tariff rate.

Business relationships may be affected

The US is currently India’s second largest trading partner and the world’s largest market for Indian exports. According to the data, bilateral trade between the two countries was estimated to be around US $ 141 billion in the year 2025, of which India alone exported $ 87.3 billion. In such a situation, the imposition of 10% additional duty may increase the cost of Indian exporters, due to which Indian goods may become costlier in the American market.

India expressed strong protest

The Government of India has lodged a strong objection to this investigation initiated by the US Trade Representative and the decision to impose tariffs. The Indian side says such sensitive issues should be discussed in the forum of ongoing bilateral trade agreements and not impose unilateral tariffs.

This move by the Trump administration comes after the US Supreme Court declared some of the previous tariffs imposed through the President’s emergency powers illegal.
