Delhi Police claims: 400 criminals seen around Jantar Mantar movement in 5 days, increased concern over security
In a big disclosure, Delhi Police said that the presence of about 400 criminals was recorded between July 20 and 24 around the site of the ongoing Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar. According to sources, the police is now thoroughly investigating the activities and movements of these people. According to preliminary information, the investigating agencies are trying to find out whether these people had any role in the incidents of Parliament march, vandalism and violence that took place in New Delhi on July 20. For this, CCTV footage, technical evidence and other intelligence inputs are being analyzed.
According to the report, this information came to light through FRS (Facial Recognition System) installed in Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas. This is a technology through which the face of a person captured on camera is matched with the available database, which helps the police in identifying him. According to Delhi Police, with the help of this technology, about 400 criminals were identified who were seen at the site of the ongoing CJP agitation at Jantar Mantar and its surrounding areas between July 20 and 24.
Police say that now the activities and movement of these people are being investigated in detail. Investigative agencies are trying to find out whether they had any role in the incidents of violence, vandalism and disturbance of law and order that took place during the Parliament march in New Delhi on July 20. For this, CCTV footage, technical evidence and other intelligence inputs are also being analyzed.
FRS keeps an eye on people with criminal records
According to police sources, the purpose of the Facial Recognition System (FRS) deployed during the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar is not to monitor common protesters. It is being used to identify those people who have a criminal record and who are suspected of disrupting law and order by infiltrating the protest. Sources said four FRS units have been installed at main entry and exit points around the protest site. All these units are directly linked to the database of Delhi Police, due to which suspicious persons can be identified rapidly. According to officials, real-time monitoring is being done through this system. If any wanted criminal, person of bad character or any person with criminal background comes under the radar of the camera, the system immediately identifies him and sends an alert to the concerned police officers.
According to a Delhi Police source, hundreds of people with criminal background have been identified so far with the help of Facial Recognition System (FRS). He said that this technology is proving effective in strengthening the security system and helps in keeping an eye on such people who may try to disturb law and order under the guise of demonstration. The source said the system is equipped with high-resolution cameras that are capable of taking clear photographs of faces even from a distance. After a person’s face is captured on camera, his picture is immediately matched with the Delhi Police database. If any wanted, fugitive or person with criminal background is identified through the system, an immediate alert is sent to the concerned police unit. After this, the police can initiate necessary verification and legal process without any delay.
The police officer said that the deployment of this technology is expected to help the police at both prevention and investigation levels. According to him, this will enable the security agencies to keep an eye on the anti-social elements who may try to enter into any protest and create disturbance or disturb the law and order. The official said that through FRS, suspicious activities are being monitored in real time, so that if necessary, immediate alert can be sent to the concerned police units and timely action can be taken. However, this is not the first time that Delhi Police has used facial recognition system. Even before this, to strengthen the security system, FRS cameras have been installed in different parts of the capital during many big events and festivals including Republic Day, Independence Day, Holi, Diwali, Eid, Ramlila.
