AI Regulation: Consultation paper on AI regulation will come in a month, focus will be on deepfakes and security

Tezzbuzz Desk- IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the government will release a consultation paper on regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within a month. It will focus on important issues like AI security, harm caused by deepfakes, human-centric approach and skill development.

The Government of India is taking steps towards creating a framework for the regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI). IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said on Thursday that the government will issue a consultation paper on the subject within a month. Its purpose is to discuss the safe use of AI and the potential risks associated with it. On the occasion of the release of the World Development Report, Vaishnav said that this consultation paper will become the foundation for the regulation of AI in the country. He said that now the time has come to prepare a proper regulatory framework for this technology in India. He also talked about requesting the ministry to bring out a consultation paper focused on security.

According to the minister, security is the most important aspect related to the use of AI. The proposed document will also cover topics such as the harm caused by deepfakes, human-centred approaches and skill development. Describing deepfakes as a serious challenge for the society, Vaishnav said that its quality is improving every day. This can make it difficult for people to differentiate between genuine and fake content.

He said that people believe in deepfakes, due to which misconceptions spread and people start believing wrong things. The government's proposed consultation paper will form the basis of regulatory discussions for the responsible and safe use of AI.
