New Delhi: On Monday, a US court dismissed the criminal case against Indian industrialist Gautam Adani. This decision by Brooklyn-based US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis, regarding the fraud and bribery case, followed a request from federal prosecutors.
The Department of Justice had informed the court of its decision not to pursue the fraud and bribery case. While inquiring about the reasons for withdrawing the case, the US District Judge also sought to know from Adani whether any promises had been made in exchange.
It is reported that Adani had pledged to invest $10 billion in the US in November 2024; at that time, the allegations had not yet been made public. Adani had been accused in 2024 of agreeing to bribe Indian government officials to secure approval for a solar power plant project for a subsidiary of his group.
The Adani Group has consistently denied the allegations. Adani himself never appeared in the US court to respond to the charges. On May 18, the Department of Justice had stated that it would not proceed with the case.
