Congress’s counterattack on women’s reservation: Women leaders in 26 cities put the government’s objective before the public.

New Delhi, 21 April. The main opposition party Congress has intensified its nationwide campaign regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill. On Tuesday, women leaders of Congress held press conferences simultaneously in 26 major cities of the country. In these press conferences, the leaders presented before the public the real purpose of the recently concluded special session of Parliament.

Modi government is misleading the country in the name of women’s reservation

Women leaders of Congress alleged that the Modi government is misleading the country in the name of giving reservation to women. He says that the real objective of the government is not to empower women, but to retain power through delimitation. The leaders claimed that under the guise of the Women’s Reservation Bill, the government wants to take the delimitation process forward, which could lead to a major reorganization of seats in the Lok Sabha and various state assemblies.

According to the Congress, this move is a political ploy by the ruling party rather than genuine empowerment of women. Women leaders of the party said that through this nationwide campaign, Congress is exposing the intentions of the Modi government and is also trying to unite other opposition parties on this issue.

Congress is not against reservation

All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Anjali Nimbalkar alleged that the BJP is using the Women’s Reservation Amendment Act as a shield for the 2029 elections by insisting on the delimitation exercise instead of giving immediate reservation to women.

Nimbalkar said that Congress is not against reservation for women, but is also not in favor of delimitation with the help of BJP to increase seats in Parliament. Modi government should immediately implement the Women’s Reservation Bill 2023. If the government implements it in the upcoming monsoon session, the opposition will fully support it. During this, he also demanded the Central Government to conduct caste census and implement reservation on its basis.

Sharp attack by Rajya Sabha MP Ranjit Ranjan

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Ranjit Ranjan, while addressing a press conference in Raipur, accused BJP of spreading confusion on the women’s reservation issue. He said that everyone from the Prime Minister to the Chief Minister is continuously lying. Ranjit Ranjan said that BJP is spreading the illusion that Congress and the opposition did not support the Women’s Reservation Bill, hence it could not be passed. Whereas the reality is that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act 2023 (128th Constitutional Amendment) has been passed in both the houses of the Parliament in September 2023 and President Draupadi Murmu has also signed it. This has become a law.

He further said that the bill that BJP brought on 16 April 2026 was not for women’s reservation but Delimitation Amendment Bill and Union Territory Law Amendment Bill. In this, there was a proposal to reduce the Lok Sabha seats to 850, state seats to 815 and union territories seats to 35.

Ranjit Ranjan questioned that when a new census is starting in 2026-27 and the government has also talked about caste census, then why is delimitation being done on the basis of 2011 census? If the government really wants to give reservation to women, then why doesn’t it implement 33 percent reservation on the existing seats without waiting for delimitation? All opposition parties including Congress are ready for this.

He said that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act of 2023 was going to come into force from 2034, but it could be implemented immediately through amendment. The Congress MP further said that BJP’s intention was not for women’s reservation, but for its own delimitation, which could not succeed due to the unity of the opposition.

Big difference between BJP’s words and actions

Here, former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot also termed the facts presented by BJP as misleading. Gehlot said that the bill recently brought in Parliament was not for women’s reservation, but for delimitation as per one’s wish. There is a big difference between the words and actions of BJP. Gehlot said that the Women’s Reservation Bill has already been passed unanimously in September 2023 and has become a law. Even after three years have passed, the government has not issued its notification. Now that the notification has been issued, the delimitation is being added to it also.

He said that if the government really wants to give reservation to women then it should implement it immediately. Congress is fully prepared on this issue. This nationwide campaign of Congress is being considered as an attempt to unite the opposition parties and put pressure on the Modi government. The party is adamant on the demand for immediate implementation of women’s reservation and keeping it separate from delimitation.
