Court sought information from the government on the policy of remission and premature release.
Bureau Prayagraj- Allahabad High Court has sought detailed information from the state government on remission of sentence and premature release policy. The case will be heard on May 25. This order was given by the division bench of Justice Soumitra Dayal Singh and Justice Swaroopama Chaturvedi on suo motu PIL.
In the compliance affidavit filed by the state government, it was said that 3746 applications were received between September 2024 and February 2026. Of these, 3447 were taken up for consideration, 2570 applications were disposed of. The remaining 877 applications are still pending, a final decision has not been taken on them.
In 2570 disposed cases, 1357 prisoners have been released, while the applications of 1213 were rejected. On this, the court has given time to the state government till May 25 to file a detailed compliance affidavit. It has been asked that it should be made clear on what grounds the decision was taken in favor of the released 1357 prisoners. At the same time, the rejected applications of 1213 prisoners should also be mentioned.
