Digital Desk, Busted. For vehicle owners using FASTag, changing banks will now be much easier than before. Under the new system, FASTag users will not need to remove the old sticker from the windshield of their car and get a new physical tag installed when they change banks. Like a mobile SIM, now the same FASTag can be ported to another bank.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launched this facility named OneTag at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 held in Mumbai on Friday. Its purpose is to simplify the existing process of changing bank related to FASTag.
Till now, if a vehicle owner had to change the bank linked to FASTag, then the old FASTag account had to be closed first. After this, the process had to be completed again with the new bank and a new physical tag was issued. In the new system, this entire exercise will not be required and the existing sticker can be used with other banks.
The way of passing vehicles will not change at the toll plaza.
Despite the introduction of OneTag, the process for vehicle owners at the toll plaza will remain the same as before. Neither will the vehicle have to be stopped at the toll nor will it have to go through any additional process. Toll fee through FASTag will continue to be deducted in the normal manner.

The necessary changes related to changing banks will happen in the digital system behind the scenes. The National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) network will update the information of the new bank. This will make portability of FASTag possible and the vehicle owner will not need to change the physical tag.
There will be less need to make new FASTag again and again
This facility is expected to reduce the process of issuing a new FASTag by removing the old tag. Resources for printing, packaging, delivery and reissuance of new tags can be saved. The government believes that this will help in reducing plastic waste as well as reduce the expenses related to physical tags.
What is RFID and NETC?
RFID i.e. Radio Frequency Identification technology is used in FASTag. The information of the chip present in FASTag is read at the toll plaza through radio waves, due to which the toll fee process is completed without stopping the vehicle. Whereas NETC i.e. National Electronic Toll Collection is an interoperable digital platform. It has been developed by NPCI and through this, toll plazas, FASTag issuing banks and vehicle owners across the country remain connected to a common digital system. The new portability feature of OneTag will work through this network.
