Is social media a threat to children? 85 percent Americans admit addiction and impact on mental health

New Delhi. Social media has become an important part of people's lives around the world today, but in America, concern about its impact on children and adolescents is increasing rapidly. According to a new survey, a large number of American citizens are in favor of strict government monitoring of social media companies and implementing rules like age verification to keep small children away from these platforms. The debate has intensified in American society, especially regarding the social media access of children under 16 years of age.

In a survey conducted by Reuters and Ipsos, about 61 percent people expressed the need for more government control over the functioning of social media companies. This opinion is not limited to just one political class. The survey showed significant support for tighter controls on social media among supporters of both the Democrat and Republican parties. This indicates that the issue of children's online safety is becoming a serious public concern in America, transcending political differences.

About 66 percent of the people in the survey supported such laws under which social media companies will have to implement age verification system to keep children below 16 years of age away from the platform. The support for this proposal was relatively high among Republican supporters, while a large number of people also supported it among Democrat supporters.

The biggest concern has come about the possible addiction of social media in children. In the survey, 85 percent of American citizens believed that social media can create drug addiction in children. Almost the same number of people believed that its use could be harmful to the mental health of children and adolescents. This is the reason why the demand for age restriction and monitoring on social media platforms in America is continuously getting stronger.

A major reason for concern for American parents is that children often circumvent the parental control and blocking systems put in place to keep children away from social media in other ways. In such a situation, some parents believe that monitoring only at the family level is not enough and tech companies should also take responsibility for the safety of children.

However, on the other hand, a large number of people are also present in favor of social media. About 70 percent of the people in the survey said that they find the time spent on social media platforms entertaining. At the same time, about 35 percent people described it as stressful. This clearly means that the American society is not in favor of eliminating social media completely, rather the demand to make its use safe and controlled is becoming stronger.

Meanwhile, legal pressure is also increasing on big tech companies including Meta. It has been alleged that some social media products were designed in such a way that young users remain on the platform for a long time. Meta has denied these allegations and the company says that in such cases it can be imposed with a huge financial penalty.

  • Many states in the US have also enacted laws controlling minors' social media access. On the other hand, tech industry groups supporting companies like Meta TikTok and Snap are challenging these laws in the courts. They argue that mandatory age verification and some other restrictions may raise questions related to freedom of expression.

In such a situation, the debate in America now seems to be focused on striking a balance between children's safety and digital freedom rather than completely banning social media. In the coming times, the decisions of the courts and governments may decide how much responsibility will be put on the tech companies and what new rules will be implemented to make the online world safe for children.
