Jairam Ramesh accused Home Minister Amit Shah of horse trading of opposition leaders

New Delhi, June 17. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah amid reports of defection of Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders, accusing him of weakening the opposition and leading a campaign to integrate them into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Using ‘incredible’ incentives and inducements

Jayaram alleged that Shah was using ‘unbelievable’ incentives and inducements to lure opposition members, many of whom were elected on strong anti-BJP platforms, to switch sides. He said in a post that the alleged political maneuvering was a direct attempt to ‘compensate for the humiliation’ he suffered due to the non-passage of the Delimitation Bill in the Lok Sabha.

He said, ‘The Union Home Minister is continuing his attack on the opposition to avenge the defeat due to his failure to pass the Delimitation Bill in the Lok Sabha on April 17, 2026 and is trying to destroy Indian democracy. His allurements are attracting people who were elected just two years ago on a strong anti-BJP agenda, and are now joining the BJP. The temptations being given to them are shocking.

It is noteworthy that after the defeat in the assembly elections, there is dissatisfaction and rebellion among TMC MLAs and MPs, in such a situation this comment of the Congress leader has come to the fore. Around 20 TMC Lok Sabha MPs have decided to merge with the hitherto unknown regional political party Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) and extend support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

There is talk of ‘Operation Tiger’ in Maharashtra also. There is speculation that seven of the nine Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs were in touch with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and were trying to join the ruling party. It is noteworthy that in the ruling BJP-led NDA government in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde along with many MLAs had separated from Uddhav Thackeray in 2022 and divided the party into two parts.

Jairam Ramesh claimed that the tactics being adopted by the Home Minister are similar to those employed in the ‘mutual fund industry’, and described it as a ‘completely reprehensible’ and ‘well-planned’ campaign that offers packages tailored to the individual needs of the people they want to engage with. He said, ‘There is no limit to his moral degradation. But he will not succeed in his ultimate goal.

Earlier in April, due to strong opposition in Parliament, the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, Delimitation Bill and Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill related to women’s reservation could not be passed in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
