Manipur Violence: Manipur is on fire again! So far 9 people have lost their lives, CM appeals for peace

Kamjong, Akhrul and Kankpokami, three hilly districts of Manipur witnessed heavy smoke on Sunday. So far 9 people have lost their lives in this new violent clash between Naga and Kuki community (Manipur Violence). A woman is also included in the dead. Officials gave information in this regard on Sunday.

Officials added that 6 Nagas and 2 Kukis and a farmer from the Gorkha community were killed in the violence on Friday and Saturday. This incident is said to be the deadliest of the incidents of violence in Manipur this year.

Chief Minister's call for peace

Chief Minister Yamunam Khemchand Singh while condemning the violence and killing of innocent civilians appealed to the people to maintain calm and restraint. He also directed the authorities concerned to take control of the situation and take immediate steps to maintain law and order.
The Chief Minister has posted on social media platform X and Facebook. In which he said, I condemn the killing and violence of innocent civilians in Kamjong and Kangpokpi districts. I ordered the authorities to take immediate and effective planning to bring the situation under control, maintain peace and law and order, and ensure the safety of all citizens.

He appealed to various communities, people's representatives and civic organizations to come forward and help maintain restraint and reduce tension. The Chief Minister has also requested the various sections of the society to prioritize peace, dialogue and goodwill among themselves.

Central Armed Police Force deployed

According to officials, in view of the impact of the violence, the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Manipur Police have stepped up patrolling and search operations in all the three districts to prevent the situation from worsening. Meanwhile, the violence erupted after the killing of a 42-year-old woman in Chasad village of Kamjong district on Friday night. Kamjong district is predominantly inhabited by the Naga community, but Chasad village has a majority population of the Kuki community.

A police officer spoke to reporters in Imphal. He said Domkhonei Tauthang, a mother of five, was shot in the neck. She died on the spot.

After the woman's killing, indiscriminate firing between armed groups in Kuki and Naga communities started, which continued till Saturday. A 23-year-old youth has also died during this period. More than 10 houses were burnt. The Kuki-Jo outfit blamed the security forces and the Naga armed forces for the woman's murder.

Crowd ban in areas of violence

After the violence, the District Magistrate of Kamjong issued an order under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS). Under it, gatherings of five or more people, possession of flammable and dangerous goods, as well as going to and from places where curfew is imposed, are banned.

In a separate incident in Kangpokami district on Saturday, suspected Maoists attacked Tapon and Makui villages. According to officials, in this attack, two village guards from the Naga community, M. Daimai and R. Three people died, including Gangmei. The third deceased person has been identified as Ringkangmai.

Naga Nagarik Sanghatan Working Committee JTC Manipur has claimed that 52-year-old villager Ajinbau R. His head was separated from his body by the Maoists. The organization has demanded that the severed head be returned to his family for a dignified cremation.

The Maoists fled towards Myanmar

In another attack, suspected Maoists opened fire at Tangkhul Naga-dominated Ningchou village located near the India-Myanmar border in Kamjong district. 35-year-old Ngachanso Ningshen and 48-year-old Leishishan Leishadang have died. Locals have claimed that by the time the security forces reached the village after receiving information about the attack, the Maoist attackers had managed to escape towards Myanmar.

According to locals, more than 40 people were killed in violence between the Kuki and Naga communities in the affected districts in February this year. Many houses were burnt here. The violence mainly took place in parts of Senapati district including Ukhrul, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, Tamenglong and Noni districts.
