India and Russia reaffirmed their industrial partnership during a high-level roundtable on April 16, 2026in New Delhi. Co-chaired by the Indian Steel Secretary and Russia’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Mikhail Iurinthe session was a centerpiece of the Bharat Steel 2026 summit at Bharat Mandapam.
Strategic Cooperation Pillars
The dialogue focused on four areas essential to India’s Vision 2047 of reaching a 300-million-tonne steel capacity:
Raw Material Security: Russia is now India’s second-largest coking coal supplier, with imports surging 63% in January 2026 alone. Discussions focused on long-term contracts to stabilize metallurgical coal supply amidst global price volatility.
Technology & R&D: The ministries explored the transfer of advanced Russian smelting techniques and joint research into high-grade specialty steel for the defense and automotive sectors.
Equipment & Logistics: To support “Make in India,” the roundtable identified opportunities for Russian firms to manufacture specialized steel-making machinery and spare parts within Indian industrial zones.
Green Steel: Both sides are committed to exploring low-emission production technologies and carbon capture to align with global sustainability standards.
Why It Matters
For New Delhi, Russia offers a vital, non-Western corridor for raw materials and technical expertise. For Moscow, this partnership is a cornerstone of its “Pivot to Asia,” ensuring a massive market for its industrial exports. The session concluded with a proposal for a permanent Joint Working Group to monitor these projects, signaling a shift from high-level dialogue to concrete economic integration.
