Prime Minister Modi highlighted several portals, networks and modes of cooperation related to sectors such as MSMEs, startups, agriculture, skills, social security, urban mobility and clean energy. “We want our entrepreneurs, farmers, researchers, women, youth and common citizens to actively participate in this,” PM Modi said. Support for startups
Modi mentioned the BRICS MSME Cooperation Portal, which is designed to connect small businesses in member countries with finance, information and new markets. According to information available on PIB, this platform will connect MSMEs with technology hubs, financial institutions, trade associations, training institutes and policy makers. BRICS has established an incubator network connecting national nodal agencies of member countries, selected incubators and startups. The aim of this system is to give eligible startups the opportunity to get support from incubators and experts outside their home country.
For agriculture and farmers
Modi also emphasized on increased use of technology in the agriculture sector through 'BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture'. The initiative aims to bring artificial intelligence, geospatial technology and digital public infrastructure to agriculture, agro-forestry, fisheries and aquaculture.
From Traditional Farming to Modern Farming
BRICS countries have also established a network of 'centres of excellence' focusing on agro-ecology and regenerative agriculture. Modi said these centers will work to link traditional agricultural knowledge with modern scientific methods to improve resilience to climate change and agricultural productivity.
A new BRICS platform for employment and social security
Modi mentioned another initiative called 'BRICS Connect', a network of BRICS cooperation for capacity building, employability and new skills and technologies. This voluntary platform covers topics such as skills and employability, social security systems, women's participation in the workforce and digital public infrastructure.
For urban development, Modi also mentioned the “BRICS Urban Mobility Hub”, a platform for member countries to exchange ideas and practices on affordable, inclusive and sustainable transport. This initiative brings BRICS cooperation into the field of urban policy, which is becoming an increasingly important area for member countries given the rapidly growing cities and increasing infrastructure needs.
Major agenda for energy sector
A 'Digital Center of Excellence' for Smart Grids and Energy Storage has also been launched as a voluntary collaboration platform. This will allow member countries to share technical information, regulatory frameworks and experiences of potential pilot projects related to power grids and energy storage. Modi said the initiative could help make clean-energy systems more efficient, reliable and accessible.
Additionally, many of the approaches or systems mentioned by Modi are already operational as networks or platforms, while others are still at the proposal stage. Modi wants BRICS measures to be available to the 'Global South'. He said the scope of initiatives initiated under BRICS should eventually expand beyond the group.
