Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is common during the rainy season, but it spreads even more rapidly in closed spaces like offices. Many people touch the same meeting room, printer, table, and pantry throughout the day, increasing the risk of infection exponentially. In such a situation, even the slightest carelessness can expose the entire office to the virus.
What is pink eye and why does it occur?
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the thin membrane covering the whites of our eyes and the inner part of the eyelids. When this membrane becomes inflamed, the eye appears red or pink. This problem can be caused by viral infections, bacteria, allergies, or dust. Allergic conjunctivitis does not spread from one person to another, but viral and bacterial pink eye are highly contagious.
How does the infection spread?
Pink eye spreads rapidly through touching contaminated objects in the office, sharing the same towel or hand towel, and using someone else’s eye makeup, contact lenses, or glasses. Additionally, frequent contact with an infected person can increase the risk of infection.
What are its symptoms?
This infection can cause red or pink eyes, persistent watering, burning or itching, a stinging sensation, swollen eyelids, and sticky discharge. Bacterial pink eye can cause so much discharge that the eyelids stick together upon waking. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.
How to prevent this at the office?
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Always sanitize your hands after touching common objects like the keyboard, mouse, telephone, and desk, and avoid touching your eyes. Do not share personal items like cosmetics, eye drops, and contact lenses with anyone. If you have pink eye, do not come to the office until you are completely cured. Do not self-administer any eye drops; always consult a doctor.
