Lakhimpur Kheri. The country's first biopolymer plant is being built by Balrampur Chini Mills Limited at Kumbhi in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. Here poly lactic acid (biodegradable) based bio plastic will be made from sugarcane. This will produce products like bottles, cups, plates and carry bags.

The foundation stone was laid in February 2025
According to reports, the foundation stone of this plant was laid by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 22 February 2025 at the Kumbhi Sugar Mill complex. During this, he had said that under the policy of the state, such investment is being encouraged and Balrampur Sugar Mill is the first group to take steps in this initiative. He also linked it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of “Make in India” and “Self-reliant India”.

What is the benefit to farmers and youth?
The Chief Minister of the state had said that such a plant would go a long way in increasing the income of farmers and providing employment to the youth. He also informed that there are 120 sugar mills in the state, out of which 10 belong to Balrampur Sugar Mill Group. According to him, this plant will provide an alternative to plastic. It will also strengthen the campaign to save the environment.

According to information received from sources, the construction work of the plant is going on in Kumbhi after the foundation stone was laid. Recently the District Magistrate also inspected the construction site.
