New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming meeting is expected to put defense cooperation at the center of India-Russia ties, with key military projects including the S-400 air defense system, Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet and BrahMos missile upgrades likely to dominate discussions.
The two leaders are scheduled to hold bilateral talks in New Delhi on September 11 on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The meeting comes at a time when both countries are looking to expand strategic cooperation in defense technology and joint production.
S-400 Delivery Completion On Agenda
One of the immediate issues expected to come up is the completion of India's S-400 Triumf air defense system deal with Russia.
India signed a Rs 40,000-crore-plus agreement with Moscow in 2018 for five S-400 systems. Three units have already been delivered, while the remaining systems are expected to arrive in 2026.
The S-400 plays a crucial role in India's air defense network as it can track and engage multiple aerial threats, including aircraft, cruise missiles and certain ballistic missile targets.
Russia has indicated that it remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under the agreement.
Russia Pushes Su-57 Stealth Fighter Offer
The biggest attraction of the meeting could be Russia's offer of its advanced Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet to India.
Moscow has signaled that discussions could include not only the sale of the aircraft but also possible technology transfer and production cooperation.
The Su-57 is equipped with stealth features, advanced avionics, sensor integration and multi-role combat capabilities.
For India, access to such technology could strengthen the Indian Air Force's capabilities as it looks to modernize its fighter fleet.
However, technology transfer involving stealth systems, engines, radar and electronic warfare equipment remains highly sensitive.
BrahMos Missile Upgrade Talks Expected
Another major focus area will be the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile programme, one of the most successful examples of India-Russia defense cooperation.
Both countries are looking at upgrading the missile with additional capabilities to improve its range, effectiveness and global competitiveness.
The BrahMos missile is currently used by the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, and has also emerged as a major defense export product.
Defense Ties Enter New Phase
The Modi-Putin meeting comes as India continues to diversify its defense imports while maintaining its long-standing military partnership with Russia.
For Moscow, advanced defense cooperation with India remains strategically important amid changing global dynamics.
For New Delhi, access to modern technology, local manufacturing and joint development remains a key priority under the push for defense self-reliance.
