Trump Announces Major Iowa Steel Project

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is announcing a $15 billion steel plant in eastern Iowa that the White House says will become the largest steel-producing facility in U.S. history.

Trump was scheduled to announce the project Monday afternoon alongside steel-industry executives and Commerce Department officials.

The new mill will be developed by Mesabi Metallics, a Minnesota company owned by India’s Essar Group.

The White House said the project reflects Trump’s effort to expand domestic manufacturing and reduce American dependence on imported industrial products.

Plant Expected to Create More Than 2,000 Jobs

The Iowa steel plant is expected to begin production in 2030.

According to the White House, its construction and operation will create more than 2,000 jobs in the United States.

Once fully developed, the mill is projected to produce 10 million tons of steel annually—more than any other American steel plant.

“President Trump is delivering on his promise to rebuild American industry, reshore manufacturing, and create new jobs,” White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said. “Today’s announcement underscores the President’s historic efforts to revitalize the U.S. steel industry.”

The Wall Street Journal first reported the planned announcement.

Minnesota Mine Will Supply Iowa Facility

The plant will receive iron ore from a new $2.5 billion mine developed by Mesabi Metallics in Minnesota.

The White House said the arrangement would allow the steel to be produced from raw material to finished product entirely within the United States.

Mesabi Metallics is located in Nashwauk, Minnesota. an area with a long history of iron mining.

The integrated production process is intended to strengthen domestic supply chains and support additional manufacturing jobs.

White House Emphasizes American Workers

In a social media post promoting the announcement, the White House said Trump is “prioritizing hardworking Americans instead of foreign labor.”

The plant is being developed with investment from Essar Group, an industrial conglomerate founded in India in 1969.

Essar operates businesses in energy, miningtechnology and retail, according to the company’s website.

Although the project has foreign financial backing, administration officials are emphasizing that construction, production and employment will be centered in the United States.

Announcement Comes Before Iowa Midterms

The steel project is being announced as Trump attempts to energize Republican voters before the midterm elections.

Iowa’s gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races have become increasingly competitive, adding pressure on Republicans to defend offices in a state that has supported Trump in recent elections.

The administration is expected to highlight the project as evidence that its trade and industrial policies are attracting major investments and creating jobs in the Midwest.

Trump Raised Steel Tariffs to 50%

Earlier in 2026, Trump increased tariffs on imported steel and aluminum to 50%.

The president argues that the tariffs protect American manufacturers from foreign competition and encourage companies to build factories in the United States.

Critics have warned that higher import duties could increase the cost of steel-dependent products, including automobiles, appliances and construction materials.

Those added costs could eventually be passed to consumers.

Trump Previously Approved Nippon-US Steel Deal

Trump also approved Japanese company Nippon Steel’s takeover of the iconic American manufacturer U.S. Steel in June.

Former President Joe Biden had blocked the acquisition, and Trump initially opposed it while campaigning for president in 2024.

Trump later supported a revised agreement that gave the federal government authority over certain corporate decisions.

The Iowa project represents another large steel-sector investment involving a foreign-owned industrial company, though the administration is presenting it as part of a broader expansion of American production.
