Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers, with his resignation having been accepted by the President of India.
Bittu confirmed his resignation and said the Bharatiya Janata Party has assigned him the responsibility of working towards forming a government in Punjab. He also disclosed that he had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi a day before submitting his resignation.
Bittu’s Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21, 2026. The BJP did not renominate him to the Upper House after the completion of his tenure.
The resignation brings an end to Bittu’s tenure as the only representative from Punjab in the Union Council of Ministers.
Before joining the BJP, Bittu represented both Anandpur Sahib and Ludhiana in the Lok Sabha as a Congress MP. He later joined the BJP and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Ludhiana, where he was defeated by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
Bittu is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
Political circles are now watching to see who the BJP and the Union Government choose as the next ministerial representative from Punjab.
