New Delhi. Indian Railways has conducted a successful safety trial run of the country's premium semi-high-speed train 'Vande Bharat Express' in the beautiful and difficult Western Ghats region of Karnataka under South-Western Railway (SWR). The trial was mainly conducted in the 55 km long challenging ghat section between Sakhaleshpur to Subrahmanya Road on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway route.
Very complex route from engineering point of view:
This railway route of the Western Ghats is known for its amazing natural beauty as well as difficult terrain. Running a train on this route passing through dense forests, deep valleys and hills is considered quite risky and technically challenging.
There are 57 tunnels, 226 major bridges and 108 sharp turns on this 55 kilometer long track. The climbs and slopes here are quite steep, requiring the addition of additional engines (banker locomotives) to control the speed of normal trains.

This 20-coach Vande Bharat train, specially designed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, has been fitted with Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB) technology to ensure safe travel on the hilly route. This system automatically activates emergency brakes as soon as the speed of the train exceeds the speed limit on the slope. A thorough check of the train's brakes, speed and stability on turns was carried out under the supervision of the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) and railway officials.
Tourism and travelers will get big benefits:
Regular service will be started on this route after the completion of the trial process and approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). This will drastically reduce the travel time between Bengaluru and the coastal city of Mangaluru. Also, by sitting in this modern train with large windows, passengers will be able to enjoy the picturesque views of the Western Ghats and the mist covered hills.
