The instant messaging app WhatsApp on Monday placed several accounts, including those in India, under review for 24 hours. The company blocked all features of the app. Affected users took to social media to report the problem.
However, WhatsApp has said regarding this action that the company has taken this step against people who are trying to misuse the service.
What did WhatsApp say?
A WhatsApp spokesperson said, “We’re always trying to stay ahead of people who try to abuse our service and ban accounts to help keep other users safe. Sometimes we make mistakes, and if we do, we try to fix it as quickly as possible so people can get back to chatting.”
Actually, this problem in WhatsApp came to light around 8 pm on Monday night when users started facing this problem from the messaging app without any prior warning.
WhatsApp message shown to users
WhatsApp displayed an account review message on the screen for users. It read, “Account is under review. Request date: August 3, 2026 Your account activity and device information are being checked to ensure they comply with our Terms of Service. We’ll let you know the results, usually within 24 hours.”
Following this message, WhatsApp displays an option to learn about account issues. This includes guidance on how to use WhatsApp responsibly, and options about stolen phones and accounts. Some users posted different messages on social media.
User feedback
One user wrote on social media, “My WhatsApp account has been disabled for no apparent reason. I’ve already appealed, but the review page only shows a generic message saying it will usually be reviewed within 24 hours. Please help me immediately.”
