Automobile Desk: The popularity of electric vehicles is increasing rapidly in the Indian automobile market, but at the same time there is concern among customers about limited range and lack of charging stations. To overcome this range anxiety, Chinese automaker Chery is preparing to enter India with a completely new technology. Chery's premium sub-brand 'Exeed' has filed a patent for its new car ET8 REEV in India. This is the company's second range extender patent for the Indian market, before which the Exceed EX7 patent has also been revealed.
The biggest feature of Exceed ET8 REEV is its powerful driving range. According to reports, this vehicle is capable of running about 200 kilometers on battery power only. At the same time, when its petrol tank is full and the battery is fully charged, it can travel a total distance of more than 1,300 kilometers. Such a huge range can prove to be a huge advantage for Indian drivers traveling long distances.
Technically this vehicle is quite different from traditional electric or hybrid cars. REEV (Range Extender Electric Vehicle) technology has been used in it. The ET8 gets a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with an LFP battery with a capacity of around 40kWh and a generator motor. The special thing is that its petrol engine does not directly provide power to the wheels of the vehicle, rather its only function is to keep the on-the-go battery charged. The wheels of the car are driven solely by the electric motor at all times, providing the best balance of fuel efficiency and performance.
In terms of design, Exceed ET8 looks quite bold and muscular. Its boxy profile gives it a strong presence on the road, which is largely inspired by the company's full-electric car, the ET9. Both these models were first showcased to the world at the Exceed Brand Day held in December 2025. Rear-hinged setup (suicide doors) is seen in the rear doors of this car, which adds to its premium look.
With the patent being filed in India, it is clear that Chery is making a concrete strategy to enter the passenger vehicle segment of the country. There are talks that the company may start its Indian operations by partnering with JSW Group. Although patenting does not mean immediate launch and the chances of it hitting the market in 2026 are very slim, but the ongoing testing of different hybrid models in India indicates that this premium vehicle may be seen running on Indian roads in the coming few years.
